How To Prepare A Successful Account Application Form

The information requested in this form will be used by MHPCC to justify to the USAF Research Laboratory why you should have a computing account at the Maui High Performance Computing Center. MHPCC is dedicated to supporting research and development in high performance computing, particularly computation using distributed parallel machines located at MHPCC. In addition, MHPCC supports and encourages computing research and development, and software research and development with direct relevance to DoD research and development programs, and in particular in collaboration with DoD scientists and engineers.

Generally speaking, the proposal should be well-written and spell-checked, at least. The proposal should indicate whether the account request is for feasibility and investigative studies, prototype development of algorithms and software, or for production computing and science.

The recommendations for the various categories are as follows.

Section 1 Of The Application Form

  • Funding Source
This category should indicate if the research has been peer-reviewed and is being supported by some agency, academic department, or organization. This does not indicate a requirement that the computing support be funded as a condition for being granted an MHPCC account.
  • Statement of Work
Make a clear statement of what you expect to accomplish with the use of the computing account. Emphasize use of the parallel computing environment. Indicate what new algorithms or software will be developed. Clearly distinguish between the software to be used and to be developed. Indicate what testing and evaluation will be used to measure success of the work. Indicate what publications can be expected and when. Indicate whether the project is a feasibility study, prototype development, or production computing to accomplish the goal.
  • Justification
Why should MHPCC support this proposal?
  • Computational Technology Areas
These areas are specific areas of emphasis for the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program. Specifying these areas will allow MHPCC to network academic researchers with DoD scientists and engineers. However, if none of these areas are appropriate, other areas are provided, allowing us to network researchers in the same areas to encourage collaborations and cross-disciplinary projects. Please do not leave this category blank.
  • CPU Estimates
Note that this information is for planning and scheduling. Indicate the mix of jobs you expect. For example, do you expect to submit a large number of small CPU jobs requiring a few processors, a small number of jobs requiring hours of computing and many processors, etc...

Section 2 Of The Application Form

The questions in this section require no special recommendations.
